Attended by a select group of 150 top tour operators and travel agents in Brazil, Broadway meets Brazil also served as an incentive promotion to increase travel bookings to New York City in 2012, with a specific focus on increasing Broadway’s exposure among Brazilian travel planners.

Brazil is New York City’s number three overseas market. An estimated 589,000 Brazilian residents traveled to New York City in 2010 and contributed approximately $1.6 billion in spending to the City’s economy—a new record and 77% increase over 2009. The top-ranked activities for travelers include shopping, dining and cultural tourism. Overall New York City welcomed a record-breaking 48.8 million visitors who contributed $31 billion in direct spending. Tourism is the fifth-largest industry in New York City, supporting nearly 310,000 jobs across its five boroughs. The City remains on track to meet Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s goal of attracting 50 million visitors annually by 2012.

The United States is the number one market for Brazilian travel overseas; an estimated 1.2 million Brazilians visited the United States in 2010—34% more than in 2009. Conversely, about 667,000 Americans traveled to Brazil in 2009, making it the number one destination for American travelers visiting South America.

The Broadway Collection is a surefire hit for travelers to New York City, and tickets to our member shows can be purchased from our travel partners throughout Brazil.

The Collection welcomes the already established mega-hit The Book of Mormon along with new productions Godspell and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which are set to open in the coming months.

The Broadway Collection is a group of new and classic Broadway musicals selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets are available through The Broadway Collection’s international partners.

From Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, and Bobby Lopez, co-creator of Avenue Q, comes The Book of Mormon, a new Broadway musical that The New York Times calls “the best musical of this century. The kind of newborn, old-fashioned, pleasure-giving musical that our grandparents told us left them walking on air. Heaven on Broadway.” The Book of Mormon was the winner of nine 2011 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Godspell is the beloved classic from Stephen Schwartz, the Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer of Wicked and Pippin, and comes to Broadway this fall in a brand new, intimately staged, one-of-a-kind production. Godspell features a Tony-nominated score filled with the popular hits “Day by Day,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” and “Turn Back, O Man” and tells a timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love that has touched the hearts of countless theatergoers all over the world.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is coming to Broadway in a new production this fall featuring internationally renowned stars Audra McDonald as Bess, Norm Lewis as Porgy, and David Alan Grier as Sporting Life. This heartbreaking love story boasts some of the most famous and beloved works from the Great American Songbook, including “Summertime,” “Bess, You Is My Woman,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Loves You, Porgy.”

The Broadway Collection features everything from classics like The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, and The Phantom of the Opera, to brand new productions like Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, and Sister Act. The Broadway Collection is rounded out by Anything Goes, Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, Memphis, Cirque Du Soleil’s Zarkana, Mary Poppins, and Wicked. The Collection’s member shows are sure-fire hits for visitors to New York City.

Watch the video on the 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 18, 2011.

The global smash hit musical Mamma Mia!, based on the songs of ABBA, will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Broadway this October. The show opened at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001, and has become one of the most successful musicals of all time anywhere in the world. Mamma Mia! will also celebrate the honor of becoming the 10th longest running show in Broadway history in September.

The Super Trouper Celebration, a series of 10 special live events, is being planned in the New York area over the weeks leading up to these two momentous occasions. The celebration will be a “thank you” to New York City and all fans of the show for the incredible support over the past decade. A full list of events can be found on Mamma Mia!’s website.

Mamma Mia! global producer Judy Craymer said: “New York audiences embraced us when we arrived on Broadway and gave us the encouragement and support to not only send the show around the world, but to brave Hollywood and the movies. The global success would never have happened without the energy of New York City. Mamma Mia!’s 10th anniversary is like a homecoming and a very special moment for everyone involved in the show.”

Mamma Mia! is part of The Broadway Collection, a group of new and classic Broadway musicals selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets are available through The Broadway Collection international partners.

Seen by over 50 million people around the world, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ global smash hit musical Mamma Mia!, is celebrating over 4,000 performances in its tenth smash hit year at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre and remains among Broadway’s top-selling musicals. The blockbuster feature film adaptation of Mamma Mia!, produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, is the most successful movie musical of all time grossing $600 million worldwide.

Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a tiny Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Songs including “Dancing Queen”; “The Winner Takes It All”; “Money, Money, Money” and “Take A Chance on Me” are all featured in this feel-good night of fun and laughter.

Produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal, the creative team responsible for bringing MAMMA MIA! to theatrical life includes some of the most gifted and celebrated talents of musical theatre and opera. With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson and directed by Phyllida Lloyd.

Cirque du Soleil presents its major new acrobatic spectacle, Zarkana, at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City with performances starting June 9, 2011 for a limited engagement through October 8, 2011. The Premiere performance will be June 29, 2011. Proudly presented by iShares, Zarkana is written and directed by acclaimed film and theatre director François Girard (The Red Violin, Silk).

Zarkana will be the latest addition to The Broadway Collection, a group of new and classic shows selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets will be available through The Broadway Collection’s international partners.

Zarkana is an acrobatic rock opera that blends circus arts with the surreal to create a world where physical virtuosity rubs shoulders with the strange. The story follows Zark, a magician who has lost his powers – and the love of his life – in an abandoned theatre populated by a motley collection of off-the-wall characters and incomparable acrobats. He runs into the Mutants, four sirens as sinister as they are fabulous, who are determined to divert him from his quest.

Zarkana is a visual vortex set in a slightly twisted musical and acrobatic fantasy universe where, little by little, chaos and craziness give way to festivity and love regained. The diverse cast of more than 75 international artists transports the audience into a fantastical and suspenseful world, blurring the boundaries between the real and imaginary.

Along with François Girard, the creative team consists of the distinctive talents of Artistic Guides Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, Director of Creation Line Tremblay, Sets and Props Designer Stéphane Roy, Costume Designer Alan Hranitelj, Composer and Musical Director Nick Littlemore, Choreographers Debra Brown and Jean-Jacques Pillet, Lighting Designer Alain Lortie, Image Content Designer Raymond St-Jean, Sound Designer Steven Dubuc, Acrobatic Performance Designer Florence Pot, Rigging and Acrobatic Equipment Designer Danny Zen, and Makeup Designer Eleni Uranis.

From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,500 performing artists from close to 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in nearly 300 cities on six continents.

Sister Act opened on Broadway in New York this month at the Broadway Theatre. The new musical is produced by Whoopi Goldberg who starred in the 1992 mega-hit Touchstone Pictures film of the same name written by Joseph Howard.

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco attitude and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time, but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. Sister Act’s original score features a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White inspired musical comedy.

Sister Act will be the latest addition to The Broadway Collection, a group of new and classic Broadway musicals selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets will be available through The Broadway Collection’s international partners.

Sister Act features an original score with music by multi-Academy®, Grammy® and Golden Globe Award®-winning composer Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Enchanted), lyrics by Tony® and Academy Award®-nominee Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid), and a book by multi-Emmy Award® winners Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (“Cheers”) with additional book material by Tony® and Olivier Award® nominee Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu, The Little Dog Laughed). Directed on Broadway by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks (Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing…Forum, Smokey Joe’s Café), the production features choreography by Tony® and Olivier Award® nominee Anthony Van Laast (Mamma Mia, Bombay Dreams).

The Broadway company of Sister Act features Olivier Award®-nominee Patina Miller as Deloris Van Cartier, Tony Award®-winner Victoria Clark as Mother Superior, Fred Applegate as Monsignor, Sarah Bolt as Sister Mary Patrick, John Treacy Egan as Joey, Demond Green as TJ, Chester Gregory as Eddie, Kingsley Leggs as Curtis, Marla Mindelle as Sister Mary Robert, Audrie Neenan as Sister Mary Lazarus and Caesar Samayoa as Pablo.

When the S.S. American sails out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love. They prove that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Peppering this hilariously bumpy ride are some of musical theater’s most memorable standards, including “You’re the Top,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “I Get A Kick Out of You,” and “Anything Goes.”

Anything Goes is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Kathleen Marshall. The cast also features Colin Donnell as “Billy Crocker”, Adam Godley as “Lord Evelyn Oakleigh,” Laura Osnes as “Hope Harcourt,” Jessica Stone as “Erma,” Walter Charles as “Captain,” Robert Creighton as “Purser,” Andrew Cao as “Luke,” Raymond J. Lee as “John,” with John McMartin as “Elisha Whitney” and Jessica Walter as “Evangeline Harcourt.”

Anything Goes features music & lyrics by Cole Porter, original book by P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton, and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and new book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman.
