The Broadway Collection Wins at the 2012 Tony Awards
The shows of The Broadway Collection have received top honors at the 66th Annual Tony Awards, receiving 17 nominations in 11 different categories for Broadway theatre’s biggest night of the year. The Tony Awards is an annual ceremony presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing that honors the best new productions of the season.
The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess was nominated in an astounding ten categories and took home two Tonys including Best Revival of a Musical. Audra McDonald, who stars as Bess, won Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical and led a moving performance by the cast.
Ghost the Musical, based on the Academy Award winning film was nominated for three awards including Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design. In her Broadway debut, Da’Vine Joy Randolph was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.
Jesus Christ Superstar, the groundbreaking opera that tells the story of the last week of Christ’s’ life, received a nomination for the Best Revival of a Musical. Josh Yong, who originated the role of Judas Iscariot at the The Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a featured Role in a Musical.
The spectacular Broadway hit, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, received nominations for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Costume Design of a Musical.
