Go Back in Time with Broadway in Groundhog Day

A new addition to The Broadway Collection, Groundhog Day the Musical revives and remasters a Hollywood classic to the Broadway stage. Critically acclaimed writer Danny Rubin created the screenplay to the 1993 Columbia Pictures film along with Harold Ramis. Two-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl leads the superb cast with the role of Phil Connors. Directed by Matthew Warchus and co-choreographed by Peter Darling and Ellen Kane, Groundhog Day begins previews Thursday, March 16 and opens Monday, April 17 at the August Wilson Theatre.

Based on the life of writer Danny Rubin, Groundhog Day tells the story of Phil Connors, an arrogant local TV weatherman who, along with his producer and camera man, travels to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, PA. A blizzard causes him to be caught in a time loop, forcing him to repeat the same day over and over. As each day plays out exactly the same as before, Phil goes through a series of irrational emotions, but is there a lesson to be learned through his experiences? A feel-good, modern coming-of-age tale, this musical offers an opportunity to join the journey of Phil Connors as he tries to return to normalcy.

Groundhog Day the Musical is based on the internationally recognized film, Groundhog Day. The musical was first performed at The Old Vic in London on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 with great reviews.

As a part of The Broadway Collection, Groundhog Day belongs to a group of New York City’s most highly regarded musicals and shows, selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences and put together by Broadway Inbound.
