The Broadway Collection Wins Big at the 2011 Tony Awards

The shows of The Broadway Collection have received top honors at the 65th Annual Tony Awards, receiving 20 nominations in 14 different categories and accepting five trophies on Broadway theatre’s biggest night of the year. The Tony Awards is an annual ceremony presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing that honors the best new productions of the season.

Anything Goes, a saucy and splendid new production of Cole Porter’s musical romp across the Atlantic, was nominated in nine categories and took home three Tonys including Best Revival of a Musical. Anything Goes’ Sutton Foster, who stars as Reno Sweeney, also earned her second Tony in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical while Director and Choreographer Kathleen Marshall accepted her third Tony for Best Choreography.

Catch Me If You Can, based on the book and hit 2002 DreamWorks film of the same name capturing the astonishing true story of world-class con artist Frank Abagnale, Jr., received four nominations including Best Musical. Norbert Leo Butz, who plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty, was honored with the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical, the story of a trio of friends on a heart-warming road trip of a lifetime searching for love and friendship in the middle of the Australian outback, received two nominations. Tony Sheldon who stars as Bernadette was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and the design team of Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner took home the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.

Sister Act received 5 nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score, as well as nominations for leading actress Patina Miller in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical and for Victoria Clark who plays Mother Superior in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. The new production is based on the 1992 mega-hit Touchstone Pictures film of the same name depicting the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a murder and is forced into protective custody in a convent.
