The Broadway Collection Presents the Iconic Broadway Musical Godspell
The Broadway Collection is pleased to announce the 40th Anniversary production and first-ever Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz’s landmark rock musical Godspell.
This modern day version of Godspell retells the story of Jesus and his apostles, set to an upbeat energetic score. Modernized and funkified by Michael Holland and under the musical direction of Charlie Alterman, the show includes various musical styles such as R&B, ragtime, rap and rock ‘n roll. The cast sometimes plays their own instruments and uses props as well as the design of the theatre in order to interact with the audience and enhance the overall experience. The updated production includes references to current trends like Facebook and contemporary popular figures like Steve Jobs and Lindsay Lohan. The message, however, is still the same one of hope, friendship, loyalty and love is timeless.
Directed by Daniel Goldstein and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific), Godspell stars an incredibly talented and diverse company of 10 young actors, lead by Hunter Parrish (Spring Awakening, Showtime’s “Weeds”) as Jesus and Wallace Smith (The Lion King, American Idiot) as John/Judas.
The new Broadway revival of Godspell is produced by Ken Davenport, Hunter Arnold, Broadway Across America, Luigi Caiola, Rose Caiola, Edgar Lansbury, Mike McClernon, The Tolchin Family, Guillermo Wiechers & Juan Torres and The People of Godspell. Associate producers include Dennis Grimaldi Production, Todd Miller, Pivot Entertainment Group, Chris Welch and Cedric Yau. It features scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Miranda Hoffman, lighting design by David Weiner and sound design by Andrew Keister.
Godspell is part of The Broadway Collection, a group of new and classic Broadway musicals selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets are available through The Broadway Collection partners internationally.
Conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Academy and Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), Godspell has electrified audiences throughout the world since its original New York premiere in May 1971. Godspell’s Tony-nominated score features instantly recognizable hits including “Day by Day,” “Turn Back, O Man,” “Learn Your Lessons Well, “Prepare Ye the Way,” “Light of the World” and many more.
One of the most popular musicals in the world, Godspell originally ran for more than 2,600 performances in New York and spawned successful touring productions in major U.S. cities, a 1973 motion picture adaptation and countless international engagements for the past 40 years.
