Jesus Christ Superstar Opens in New York

The Broadway Collection is pleased to announce the return of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s hit production, Jesus Christ Superstar to Broadway. Jesus Christ Superstar arrives on Broadway in New York City at the Neil Simon Theatre when previews begin March 1, 2012. The show officially opens March 22, 2012.

This ground-breaking rock opera, which reinvented musical theatre for the modern age, tells the story of the last week of Christ’s life. Facing brutal repression by the Romans, Jesus’ disciple, Judas Iscariot, is concerned by the enthusiasm Christ’s followers have for him as the Son of God and his relationship with Mary Magdalene. Jesus ignores Judas’ concerns and leads his followers to Jerusalem where Judas must make a fateful choice between his faith and betrayal. The production follows Jesus from his arrival in Jerusalem through his betrayal, passion, and crucifixion. The score includes such chart-topping songs as “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” “Everything’s Alright” and “Superstar.”

With Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s two-time Tony Award winning Des McAnuff as Director, the creative team also includes Choreographer Lisa Shriver, Musical Director Rick Fox, Set Designer Robert Brill, Costume Designer Paul Tazewell, Lighting Designer Howell Binkley, Sound Designer Steve Canyon Kennedy and Video Designer Sean Nieuwenhuis.

The cast will feature Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ, Josh Young as Judas Iscariot, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Tom Hewitt as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas and Aaron Walpole as Annas.

Jesus Christ Superstar is part of the Broadway Collection, a group of new and classic Broadway musicals selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences. Tickets are available through the Broadway Collection partners internationally.
