The Bridges of Madison County, a new musical based on bestselling novel of the same name, will open on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre early this year. The new musical is making its Broadway debut after premiering at Williamstown Theatre Festival and garnering rave reviews. Previews for the musical began on January 17, 2014 and the show officially opens on February 20.

The Bridges of Madison County is an account of love and loss that audiences of all backgrounds will be able to relate to. The musical tells the story of Robert Kincaid and his life-changing, four-day love affair with a lonely Italian farm wife named Francesca Johnson in 1960’s Madison County, Iowa. When Kincaid arrives in Madison County to photograph the area’s covered bridges for National Geographic, he finds much more than he bargained for. The two cannot deny the inevitable spark between them, and eventually they find themselves caught up in a passionate affair. Their brief rendezvous holds a note of hope for the future, but they decide it is better for them to part ways, although the affair continues to impact the rest of their lives.

In addition to the novel, The Bridges of Madison County’s famed 1995 film adaptation starred Clint Eastwood as Robert Kincaid and Meryl Streep as Francesca Johnson. The film was nominated for several prolific honors including the Golden Globes and Academy Awards and has received critical acclaim worldwide.

Four-time Tony Award nominee Kelli O’Hara stars in this musical as Italian war bride Francesca Johnson alongside Steven Pasquale, who portrays Robert Kincaid. Joining the show’s director Bartlett Sher are lead producers Jeffrey Richards, Stacey Mindich and Jerry Frankel. Music and lyrics are by Tony-nominated Jason Robert Brown and the book is by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman.
