Cabaret Dances Its Way Back to Broadway
Cabaret, the Tony Award-winning musical, will return to Broadway for the fourth time since its original 1966 production at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show, which is one of Broadway’s most classic musicals, stars international celebrities Alan Cumming of X-Men 2 and Michelle Williams of Dawson’s Creek. Cabaret’s compelling storyline has also been seen in productions around the world, such as in London’s West End and in Canada, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, France, Spain, South America, Greece and more. Previews for Cabaret will begin on March 21, 2014 at Studio 54 and the show officially opens on April 24, 2014.
Cabaret tells the story of a seedy nightclub named The Kit Kat Klub set in 1931 Berlin when the Nazis are rising to power. There, a young English performer kindles a relationship with an American writer, all while under the watchful eye of the Kit Kat Klub’s zealous Master of Ceremonies (Emcee). Amidst the growing political and cultural unrest that surrounds the two, love blossoms between them as they spend more time together. However, all good things must come to an end, and Cabaret comes to a close with the rising conflict in Germany at the time.
Cabaret was also adapted into a 1972 film starring Liza Minnelli, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Sally Bowles. She starred alongside Joel Grey, who has acted as the Master of Ceremonies both in the film and in stage versions. In addition to being nominated for the Oscar Award for Best Picture of the Year, the film won many awards including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture.
In the musical, Scottish-born Alan Cumming will reprise his Tony Award-winning role as the Master of Ceremonies (Emcee) and Academy Award-nominee Michelle Williams of Dawson’s Creek, Brokeback Mountain, and My Week with Marilyn will hit the stage as the star of the show, Sally Bowles. In honor of the show’s third Broadway revival, Sam Mendes will reinstate his 1998 role as the show’s director and Rob Marshall also returns as the main choreographer. Music and lyrics are by the prolific songwriting team Kander and Ebb.
Cabaret is part of The Broadway Collection, a group of New York City’s most highly regarded musicals and shows, selected for their unparalleled popularity with international audiences and put together by Broadway Inbound. Tickets are available through the international Broadway Inbound and Broadway Collection partners.
