Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway Opens on Broadway
Bullets Over Broadway, the new musical adaptation of Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath’s screenplay of the 1994 film, is making its premiere on Broadway. The musical began previews on March 11, 2014 and will officially open on April 10, 2014 at the St. James Theatre.
Bullets Over Broadway tells the story of an aspiring young playwright, David Shayne, in 1920s New York City who is forced to cast a mobster’s talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it funded and produced. David is pressured to make many compromises as he works to complete the show. Eventually, the playwright must decide whether theatre or life is more important.
Emmy Award nominee Zach Braff will make his Broadway debut in Bullets Over Broadway as the main character, playwright David Shayne. Braff will star alongside several veteran stage actors, including Brooks Ashmanskas, who will play Warner Purcell, the show’s leading man. Sopranos star Vincent Pastore has been cast as mobster Nick Valenti. Other notable Broadway actors that have joined the cast are Marin Mazzie, Betsy Wolfe and Lenny Wolpe.
Bullets Over Broadway features music of the 1920s and a new book by Woody Allen. Five-time Tony Award winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman will bring the new musical to the stage with an award winning design team of Broadway veterans including Tony Award winners Santo Loquasto (scenic design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Doug Besterman (orchestrations) and Glen Kelly (musical arrangements and supervision) and Peter Hylenski (sound design).
