Kickstart to Fall
The 2015-2016 Broadway season is well underway, with original new musicals and acclaimed revivals about to officially open—as well as exciting debuts and some history-making use of unique technology.
September started with Dames at Sea, the hilarious and highly entertaining tribute to musicals, at the Helen Hayes Theatre, and George Takei’s personally inspired WWII tale came to life in the new American musical, Allegiance, in previews this month. And audiences are cheering, crying, and Conga-ing in the aisles at On Your Feet!, the inspiring story of music legends Emilio and Gloria Estefan.
Broadway also marks an exciting milestone with the spectacular 50th Anniversary production ofFiddler on the Roof, starring Danny Burstein and helmed by the creative team that brought South Pacific and The King and I to life. Burstein—a bona fide Broadway star and five-time Tony®nominee—takes on the demanding and legendary role of Tevye, who tries to hold his family together in pre-revolutionary Russia, as anti-Semitism and changing values threaten to tear them apart.
It’s hard to believe it has been ten years since Andrew Lloyd Webber had a new musical on Broadway, but he is back and returning to his roots as a rock composer with School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black film.
The show is getting a lot of buzz and making headlines its pioneering use of technology, by being the first Broadway show to create a “360” music video, which allows the viewer to see the action from any angle. Check out the video for the energetic song “You’re In the Band,” and use your mouse to view different characters or capture the lyrics on the ceiling of the classroom.
Another musical from a hit film is The Color Purple, which returns to the Great White Way in November, starring Academy Award® winner Jennifer Hudson and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) making their Broadway debuts. While Hudson is the big name attached to the revival, keep an eye on Cynthia Erivo as Celie—a role that garnered her rave reviews in London.
